Decision first: if Kosciuszko Road between Perisher and Charlotte Pass is closed to public vehicles (typical winter peak), the summer Charlotte Pass summit walk is not available as a self-drive day. Do not “fix” it by copying the 18.6 km summer card into July.
Order of operations: (1) check NPWS and Live Traffic NSW for today’s road status and chain laws, (2) treat winter as a resort and snow-play product unless you have a booked, approved oversnow transfer, (3) pick one honest day shape, (4) do not stack a Main Range ambition on closed-road hope.

What the winter road list actually changes
The Charlotte Pass summer product is a long self-powered alpine day from a trailhead you drove to. When public vehicles stop at Perisher, that trailhead is no longer your car park. Oversnow transport, if operating, is a different ticket, a different clock, and a different risk environment — not a free substitute.
Winter peak often pairs with higher illustrative vehicle entry and chain requirements on alpine approaches. Carry chains when required and know how to fit them. A “fine morning in Jindabyne” is not a chain waiver.

Resort / snow-play day: Perisher or Thredbo as the product you actually booked beds for. Use the winter-base itinerary, not the Charlotte summit itinerary.
Approved oversnow only: if NPWS or an operator is selling a legitimate Charlotte access product for your date, buy that — do not freelance a snow-road drive.
Village or Yarrangobilly: Thredbo village without a plateau walk is valid. Yarrangobilly caves/thermal can work when the Snowy Mountains Highway is honest — still not a same-day bolt-on after a failed Perisher start. Confirm tours on NPWS.
What not to invent
Do not assume the 2 October (or any dated) winter road list from a snapshot on this site is still live — snapshots go stale. Open NPWS Kosciuszko local alerts the morning you travel. Do not treat heritage huts as picnic rooms. Recreational drones are prohibited.

Can we still walk to Mount Kosciuszko from Charlotte Pass in winter?
Treat winter as a different product. Public-vehicle access beyond Perisher is typically closed in the winter peak. Any walking on snow is a mountaineering-class decision, not the signed summer 18.6 km card. Confirm current access with NPWS — this site does not green-light winter summit attempts.
Is oversnow the same as driving?
No. Oversnow is a separate, often ticketed transfer when it operates. It does not reopen Kosciuszko Road to private cars. Confirm operators and hours officially.
