Choose this when Kosciuszko Road is open beyond Perisher to Charlotte Pass and your group can honestly handle a long Grade 3 alpine day with no chairlift bail-out. You are self-sufficient from the car.

Typical planning figures: about 18.6 km return and 6–8 hours walking — often longer with photos, headwinds and mixed fitness. In the winter peak the road between Perisher and Charlotte Pass is typically closed to public vehicles; do not force a summer plan in July.

Protect the day with a reverse clock set at the car, not at the cairn. Walking out safely is success even if the summit is abandoned.

Verify road status, track advice and fees on NPWS and road information sources the morning you leave Jindabyne or Perisher corridor bases.

Track status, fees, chairlift hours, road conditions and weather change — verify on NSW NPWS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Pack and set the reverse clock

Agree out loud: primary = Charlotte Pass out-and-back summit path only when the road is open. Not Main Range. Pack full alpine day kit, 2–3L water, emergency bivy, poles, headlamp, offline road/track screenshots. Set a hard clock-time turn-around that still leaves daylight for the drive.

  2. 05:00–06:30

    Leave base early

Pay or confirm vehicle entry. Check Live Traffic / NPWS-related road notes for Kosciuszko Road. Fuel, toilets, water topped up before the final climb toward Charlotte Pass.

  3. 06:30–07:30

    Arrive Charlotte Pass

Park legally and early on fine weekends. Layers on at the car — not “once we warm up.” Agree a hard clock-time turn-around and reverse triggers (lightning, white-out, injury, cold) before leaving the trailhead.

  4. 07:30–14:00

    Summit walk out-and-back

Steady pace suited to the slowest person. Snack and hydrate often. Stay on formed track/mesh. Summit is optional if weather or energy fails — walking out safely is success. Do not add Main Range loops on a first Charlotte summit day.

  5. 14:00–16:30

Return to car with daylight margin

Keep moving on the descent even when tired. At the car: dry layers, food, delay the drive if anyone is shaky. Alpine roads punish fatigue and late light.

  6. Evening

    Recovery only

No heroics. Sleep. Reassess tomorrow with honest bodies and a fresh forecast.

Packing

  • Full alpine day kit: shell, insulation, sun protection
  • Water 2–3L per adult for long warm days
  • Extra food beyond a “normal” day walk
  • Offline map / notes + power bank
  • Emergency space blanket or bivy
  • First aid + blister kit
  • Trekking poles (strongly recommended for many)
  • Headlamp even for “day” plans

Optional kit searches: gear hub.

Parking & access tips

  • Fine summer weekends: early is mandatory — parking is limited.
  • Never block snow-clearing or emergency lanes in shoulders.
  • Do not leave valuables visible; keep a warm layer in the car for return.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Same-day full Main Range loop
  • Late starts after 8am in short seasons
  • Unfit or mixed groups better suited to Thredbo
  • Any plan that depends on winter car access beyond Perisher

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who want a pure long alpine day without chairlift dependency
  • Groups that already understand Thredbo and want a second style of summit day
  • Parties willing to reverse early for weather or energy — ego optional

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If the road is closed or doubtful: do not invent access — switch to Thredbo or Plan B
  • If the slowest person is fading before the turn-around: reverse immediately
  • If white-out or lightning develops: reverse — summit is optional
  • Thredbo vs Charlotte: pick one primary path only (see comparison article)

What success looks like

  • Safe return to the car with daylight margin for the drive
  • No Main Range stack on a first Charlotte summit day
  • Stay on mesh/formed track; herbfields left intact
  • Honest notes for next time: earlier start or shorter product
