Yarrangobilly caves & thermal pool day
Best for: Year-round Plan B or deliberate non-summit icon day
Guide updated · verify NSW NPWS the morning you go
Deliberate transfer from Thredbo/Jindabyne corridor, cave tour, thermal pool rules when open, safe return. Do not bolt on a summit.

When wind owns the chairlift or cloud owns the Main Range — or you simply want geology and a thermal pool — Yarrangobilly is the park’s other headline. It is not next door to Thredbo; make the transfer the day.
Book cave products if required, confirm pool status and fees on NPWS, and build drive breaks. Unofficial guide only.
Track status, fees, chairlift hours, road conditions and weather change — verify on NSW NPWS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Morning
Leave with confirmations
Bookings, fees approach, fuel, fire danger awareness in summer. Offline map for the corridor. Do not depart “hoping tours still have walk-ups” in peak weeks.
Late morning
Arrive & check in
Margin for queues. Layers for cave temperature vs surface weather. Follow all site instructions.
Midday
Caves ± thermal pool
Guided or show cave as booked. Thermal pool only if open and capacity/hygiene rules allow — shared natural resource, not a private spa. Pack out rubbish; keep noise reasonable.
Afternoon
Return drive with breaks
Fatigue on mountain highways is real after caves + heat/cool contrast. Stops mandatory. No same-day Main Range “since we’re out anyway.”
Packing
- Swim gear + towel if pool may be open
- Layers for caves
- Closed shoes with grip
- Snacks and water for remote driving
- Cashless payment as required
Optional kit searches: gear hub.
Parking & access tips
- Use signed caves precinct parking only.
- Do not invent parking that damages roadside vegetation.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Same-day summit or Main Range
- Rushed half-transfer after a failed high-country start without time
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Weather bail-outs from summit plans and mixed groups wanting a non-summit icon
- Families and first-timers who treat the drive as the day
- Contrast day after a successful alpine walk
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If pool or cave products are closed: still a valid day if the transfer and ethics hold
- If time is short after a failed summit: do not bolt a half-transfer without margins
- Never stack same-day full summit + caves heroics
What success looks like
- Safe signed parking only; no roadside vegetation damage
- One clear caves/pool experience without rushing
- Everyone back with energy for the return corridor drive
