Charlotte Pass & high-country approaches

Historic high village and trailhead for the longer Mount Kosciuszko Summit walk and Main Range access — when Kosciuszko Road is open beyond Perisher.

  • Best for: Longer summit days, Main Range starts, quieter alpine feel outside peaks
  • Time: Full long day for summit or Main Range
  • Kosciuszko Road from Jindabyne via Perisher. Closed between Perisher and Charlotte Pass in the winter peak — plan seasons deliberately.

Why walk from Charlotte Pass

Charlotte Pass rewards walkers who want a pure long alpine day. You earn the summit with distance rather than a lift, and you sit closer to Main Range glacial-lake country when conditions allow.

The trade-off is self-sufficiency: more hours, more weather exposure, and absolute dependence on road status. If your group is new to alpine days, Thredbo is often the kinder first summit.

Winter access reality

In the declared winter period, Kosciuszko Road typically closes between Perisher and Charlotte Pass. Charlotte Pass becomes a ski-oriented destination with different transport patterns. Do not plan a summer-style summit drive in July.

Highlights at a glance

  • Charlotte Pass Summit Walk (~18.6 km return class, 6–8 hrs)
  • Main Range access when open
  • High alpine scenery without chairlift dependence
  • Winter ski heritage village (different access model)

Practical tips

  • Leave at dawn for summit or Main Range days.
  • Carry offline maps; signal is patchy.
  • Respect Seaman’s Hut and heritage structures — emergency use, not picnics.

Facilities & services

  • Limited village services (seasonal)
  • Trailheads when open
  • Parking fills on fine summer days
