Things to do in Kosciuszko National Park
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with NSW NPWS
Most first visits revolve around a clear summit decision (Thredbo vs Charlotte Pass), then optional Main Range ambition, wildflower shorts, or a weather bail-out to Yarrangobilly. Winter is a different product (resorts and road rules). Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually the Thredbo summit path, or one easy day). Do not collect every track on a first visit.
Weather / energy bail-out
Yarrangobilly, short lookouts or rest beat a forced plateau day in wind, cloud or cold. Bail-outs are competence.
Hard-walk filter
Main Range and Snowies Alpine only after a clean first summit, honest fitness and a reverse clock — never as impulse add-ons.
- 1
Mount Kosciuszko via Thredbo
High volume · Grade 3 planning · 4–5 hrs walk + queues
Chairlift plus a formed ~13 km return Summit Walk. Best-serviced first summit for fit walkers in the snow-free season — village logistics, mesh platforms, hard turn-around culture.
- 2
Mount Kosciuszko via Charlotte Pass
Self-sufficient · 6–8 hrs · road-open season
Longer pure walk (~18.6 km return). Road-dependent; winter access beyond Perisher is typically closed. For fit, self-sufficient parties who want no chairlift bail-out.
- 3
Main Range Walk
Advanced · full day · after a successful summit
Big alpine day with glacial scenery and Blue Lake / Cootapatamba country. Fitness, weather humility and a reverse clock required. Not a first alpine day.
- 4
Yarrangobilly Caves & thermal pool
Year-round Plan B · transfer is the day
Northern-park caves and thermal pool when wind owns the plateau — or as a deliberate non-summit icon day. Book tours in peak weeks; confirm pool rules and fees on NPWS.
- 5
Snowies Alpine Walk
Multi-day or day sections · verify NPWS
Multi-day alpine walking (planning figure ~56 km full route) or strong day sections between Snowies nodes. Logistics and weather buffers beat ego miles.
- 6
Wildflowers & short lookouts
Easy–moderate · ethics first
Early-summer colour and family-friendly short walks. Stay on mesh — herbfields recover slowly. Peak weeks are busy; soft morning light helps photos.
- 7
Winter snow (resorts & oversnow)
Winter peak · chains · book early
Ski and snowboard corridors at Thredbo / Perisher, plus winter road and chain rules. Different packing list, fees and access to summer summits. Lessons if rusty.
- 8
Wildlife & leave no trace
Year-round · dusk caution · no feeding
Distance is respect. Never feed. Stay on formed track and mesh. Drive slowly at dusk on alpine approaches. Recreational drones are prohibited in this park.
