Winter is a different product

Summer Summit Walk notes do not transfer. Chairlift products, road law, packing, risk and daily rhythm all change. If you came for snow sports, use resort operators and official winter guidance as primary sources.

Kosciuszko Road between Perisher and Charlotte Pass is typically closed to public vehicles in the winter peak. Plan bases and transport accordingly.

Skills and lessons

Buy lessons if rusty. Helmets and appropriate snow-sport protection matter. Off-piste and remote snow travel can involve avalanche terrain — get qualified advice; do not freestyle from a summer hiking background.

Cross-country and snowshoe can be excellent lower-impact options when chosen on appropriate terrain with local guidance.

Booking reality

School holiday beds sell out months ahead in popular years. Under-booking then sleeping in cars in severe cold is not a clever hack — it is a safety problem.

Build weather rest into multi-day snow trips. Injury rates rise when groups push every day in fatigue.
