Yarrangobilly Caves & thermal pool
Guide updated · Entry fees, road status, chairlift hours, track conditions and seasonal …
The essential non-summit icon: limestone caves, a natural thermal pool, and a different climate pocket in the northern park. Ideal when weather cancels high-country plans, or as a deliberate contrast day on a longer Snowies trip.
Do not pair: Do not pair Yarrangobilly caves with a Kosciuszko summit walk on the same calendar day.
Turnaround: If cave tours are not running, take the thermal pool if it is open, then leave. Do not invent a “quick summit on the way home.”
- Cave tours booked out or not running — the pool and precinct may still work, but the “caves day” you sold the kids does not.
- Treating Yarrangobilly as a 20-minute detour from Thredbo — it is a different road system and a different fatigue budget.
Official NSW NPWS pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.
- Cave tours + short walks; pool access rules apply
- Half day to full day
- Short walks / cave tours (varies)
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Year-round icon — caves, thermal pool (~27 °C class), different ecosystem from the high peaks
Distance, grade, time, road status and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks before you go.

Where you start
Yarrangobilly Caves precinct
Access via Snowy Mountains Highway / signed park roads. Cave tours and pool rules, fees and opening hours change — book and verify on NPWS. Vehicle entry fees may differ from high-country stations; confirm for your date.
How to get there
- Plan drive time from Jindabyne / Thredbo / Canberra / Tumut carefully — Yarrangobilly is not next door to Thredbo.
- Check fire danger, road alerts and tour availability before you leave.
- Fuel and snacks for remote driving; build toilet stops into the transfer.
- Do not sandwich a rushed cave morning onto a late Main Range attempt the same day.
How to do it (step by step)
- Book cave tours if required; arrive for check-in windows with margin in peak weeks.
- Thermal pool: follow all hygiene and capacity rules; shared natural resource, not a private spa.
- Stay on paths in cave precincts; limestone and vegetation are sensitive.
- Layers for temperature contrast (surface weather vs cave cool).
- Return drive with mandatory breaks — highway fatigue after caves is real.
Why Yarrangobilly belongs on a Kosciuszko trip
The park covers roughly 690,000 hectares. Not every valuable day ends at 2,228 m. Yarrangobilly spreads visitor load, teaches different geology, and rescues itineraries that would otherwise force a dangerous alpine push in bad weather.
It is also a deliberate icon day for mixed groups: memorable without requiring multi-hour plateau fitness.
Make the transfer the day
From Thredbo or Jindabyne, treat the drive as the point of the day, not a ten-minute side quest. Build full half- or full-day timing. Peak periods sell out of tours — book ahead.
If you summited yesterday, do not “push through” a long transfer without breaks and sleep honesty.
Thermal pool ethics
The thermal pool is commonly described around ~27 °C when operating — confirm rules and status officially. Capacity and hygiene rules exist for public health and site protection. Follow them without negotiation.
Bring a towel and change of clothes if swimming is part of the plan — and accept closure without inventing unsafe alternatives.
Fees mindset
Park and site fees change — use NPWS only. This guide never sells park entry and never takes commission on official fees.
Budget tours as a separate line item in peak holiday weeks.
Kit after the plan is solid: alpine packing on the gear hub — Amazon searches live there, not on this walk page.

Extra tips
- Perfect Plan B when the Main Range is in cloud or wind shuts the chairlift.
- Excellent mixed-ability day — caves deliver drama without a summit pack.
- Combine with a low-key scenic drive day rather than forcing a summit after a long transfer.
- See Yarrangobilly day itinerary for a printable transfer-first skeleton.
- Confirm pool open/closed status the morning you go — do not assume.
